zone diet balance

In the April 2011 issue of “Think Healthy” Richard Neal reviews Dr. Barry Sears’ book Mastering the Zone: The Next Step in Achieving SuperHealth and Permanent Fat Loss.

While you may be thinking that Mastering the Zone is just another fad diet book, you’ll easily discover after a couple of pages that it is not. Even Neal, who initially admits that his first reaction was a yawn until he started reading the book, says his listlessness rapidly turned to enthusiasm because of the solid scientific premises that Neal believes are worth a closer look. Of course, we’re big advocates of the Zone diet plan since that is what the Calla Slimspa Medical Weight Loss plan is based upon. But let’s examine the reasons that Neal loves the Zone diet plan.

So what makes the Zone diet so great? The key to the program lies in the program’s success in gaining control of the human inflammatory response by limiting the intake of toxic omega-6 fatty acids.

Here’s how Neal defines the importance of reducing inflammation through the Zone diet.

Our bodies generate inflammation to fight infections and heal injuries. When we chronically produce excess inflammation, resulting from our food choices, the lifetime results can be detrimental.

  • Overweight and obesity.
  • The worsening of some chronic diseases.
  • The reduction of our potential for peak mental and physical performance.

According to Neal, “it’s no secret obesity in America is increasing at an epidemic rate. The Centers for Disease Control in our nation’s capital describe American society as ‘obesogenic,’ because our lifestyle promotes ‘supersizing’ food intake, non-healthy foods, and physical inactivity.”

Dr. Barry Sears, author of Mastering the Zone supports eating more like our Paleolithic ancestors in order to take better control of our health. Scientists believe our ancestors survived on a diet of about 30 percent proteins, 40 percent unrefined carbs and 30 percent lipids some 200,000 years ago. Not to mention all the daily exercise their lifestyle required. That’s the diet plan that Dr. Sears proposes in his book.

This Paleolithic eating style regimen contains about six daily grams of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA) with a ratio of omega-6 arachidonic acid (AA to EPA) of about two. Why does this matter? Because the arachidonic acid chain of naturally occurring chemical reactions to food is the building block of toxic inflammatory hormones known as eicosanoids. As Neal states, “arachidonic acid stimulates cellular inflammation which can accelerate the progression of diseases like arthritis.”

Dr. Sears has quite a few high recommendations for his book and Zone diet plan from many health professionals, ardent followers and serious athletes who claim increased energy, mental focus, and weight control. Neal concludes, ” Mastering the Zone is poised to help optimize your health.”
